Breast Milk Storage Guide

Breast Milk Storage Guide

Breast Milk Storage Guide South Africa

Freshly expressed breast milk can stay safe for several hours or months depending on temperature and storage conditions.
These recommendations are based on WHO, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): and South African Department of Health guidelines for healthy, full-term infants.

For premature or medically fragile infants, always follow healthcare or NICU-specific instructions.

How long can breast milk stay at room temperature in South Africa?

At approximately 19–20 °C, breast milk can remain safe for up to 4 hours.
If your home is cool and clean, it may extend to 6 hours, but avoid this if temperatures exceed 25 °C.
Keep milk out of direct sunlight or near warm surfaces.

Tip: In warmer months, place milk in the fridge as soon as possible after expressing.

How long can I store breast milk in a cooler bag with ice packs?

When stored around 15 °C with solidly frozen ice packs, milk stays safe for up to 24 hours.
This is ideal for travel, daycare, or transport between home and work.

How long can expressed breast milk stay in the fridge (4 °C)?

Use within 3–4 days for best freshness.
In a very clean refrigerator that maintains a steady temperature, milk can last up to 5–8 days, but sooner is always better.

Tip: Store milk at the back of the fridge, not the door, to maintain a stable temperature.

H2: How long can breast milk stay frozen safely?

At −18 °C or colder, milk keeps for up to 6 months with best quality.
In a deep-freeze (−20 °C or colder), milk can last up to 12 months.
Once thawed, never refreeze milk.

Tip: Label bags with date and amount, and lay flat to freeze for faster thawing.

How long can thawed breast milk be kept before use?

Breast milk thawed in the refrigerator should be used within 24 hours.
If warmed to room temperature, use within 2 hours.
Discard any milk left after feeding.

What should I do during South African power cuts or load-shedding?

Keep fridge and freezer doors closed to retain cold air.
If frozen milk begins to soften or partially thaw, use it within 24 hours and do not refreeze.
Store milk in smaller, flat-frozen portions to speed up thawing when needed.

How do I safely defrost frozen breast milk?

  • Thaw breast milk slowly in the refrigerator overnight for the best nutrient preservation.
  • To thaw more quickly, hold the sealed bottle or bag under warm (not hot) running water or place it in a bowl of warm water.
  • Do not refreeze thawed milk. Once fully thawed, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
  • Never thaw or warm breast milk in a microwave or in a pan of boiling water. These methods can create dangerous hotspots and destroy nutrients.
  • Do not microwave breast milk at any stage — uneven heating can cause severe burns to your baby’s mouth and alter milk composition.
  • When adding freshly expressed milk to frozen milk, always cool the fresh milk first and ensure the new portion is smaller than the frozen amount. This prevents partial thawing of the frozen milk.

Tip: Gently swirl (don’t shake) thawed milk to mix separated layers before feeding.
